Notary Public Services Policy
This service is free for River Edge residents or those currently employed in River Edge. A fee structure applies for non-residents.
The River Edge Public Library is happy to provide notary service to our patrons. However, there are some restrictions that apply. Please phone ahead to make sure a notary is available. Appointments are recommended. Walk-in service may be available at the discretion of the notary on duty. The Library provides only basic notary services. Notary service is not available for mortgage or real estate documents, deeds, wills, living wills, living trusts, codicils or depositions. Notaries cannot provide legal advice or counseling regarding documents.
In accordance with New Jersey notarial law, notaries will not provide service if the customer, document or circumstances of the request for notary service raise any issue of authenticity, ambiguity, doubt or uncertainty for the Library or the notary. In this event, the library notary may, at his/her sole discretion, decline to provide notary service.
The notary will keep a record of all patrons using this service, including contact information. Proper identification in the form of a current government-issued photo ID must be provided. Examples of acceptable ID are an unexpired driver’s license or an unexpired passport.
Documents must be signed in the presence of the notary.
If a document to be notarized must be witnessed by others, the patron must provide their own witness. Library staff and other library patrons are not available to witness documents. The witness must provide photo identification. The notary and the patron seeking the notarization must be able to communicate directly with each other. Translators are not permitted.
There is a limit of 10 documents per day. Non-residents pay $2.50 per page notarized. Donations are always welcomed.
