English as a Second Language

Looking to Volunteer as an ESL Tutor?

We are always looking for more volunteers for our growing ESL program.  No previous experience needed.  The only requirement is a strong desire to make a tangible difference in your neighbor’s life.

The key is building a relationship getting to know the needs of the students.  The ESL student may be having trouble conversing with their child's teacher, needing help interpreting a form, making doctor's appointment, looking for a new job, etc.  We encourage all volunteers to try to get to the heart of what their student is looking for (beyond the improvement of general speaking skills).

Our Library subscribes to Easy English News which is published monthly (10 times a year).  This newspaper covers current events, idioms, American culture, holidays, etc. on an adult level that can help build vocabulary and understanding of the US culture.  We also have travel, recreation, cooking and many other useful magazines in our periodical section, as well as multimedia kits in our ESL section which are all great conversation starters.

For more information on volunteering as an ESL Tutor, contact Julia Lee, Adult Services Librarian using the form below.
